There were 1,026 housing units at an average density of 316.9/square kilometre; (817.8/square mile). The racial makeup of the borough was 98.25% White, 1.27% African American, 0.04% Native American, 0.04% from other races, and 0.39% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.48% of the population.
There were 988 households, 23.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.8% were married couples living together, 8.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.6% were non-families. 31.0% of households were made up of individuals, and 19.2% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.87.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 18.7% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 25.4% from 45 to 64, and 23.4% 65 or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females, there were 89.4 males. For every 100 females aged 18 and over, there were 85.4 males.
The median household income was $34,181 and the median family income was $46,250. Males had a median income of $36,167 versus $23,516 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $18,699. About 4.8% of families and 7.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.1% of those under the age of 18 and 10.0% of those ages 65 and older.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 47.3 square miles (123 km2), of which 47.3 square miles (123 km2) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) (0.04%) is water. It is primarily rural. Forbes State Forest and Linn Run State Park occupy a large portion of the township. The Linn Run State Park Family Cabin District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. The township contains the following boroughs and villages: Mansville, Pleasant Grove, Rectors Mill, Stahlstown, and Weaver Mill. The township is bordered by Donegal & Mount Pleasant Townships to the southwest, Unity Township to the northwest, Ligonier Township to the northeast, and Somerset County to the southeast.
